    Job Description:

    The Manager, Value Stream Leader (VSL) will provide leadership to drive step change productivity improvement and to drive the delivery of annual cost savings objectives across the overall supply chain network. Specifically, this leader will be responsible for creating a lean and efficient supply chain network by introducing industry proven Lean management tools and implementing a standard playbook for the organization. Ultimately, the Manager, Value Stream Leader will develop and deploy procedures focused on integrating Lean Six Sigma into our supply chain. The Manager, VSL will drive cost productivity improvement and waste elimination across the enterprise. Additionally, the Manager VSL, will support the achievement of the low cost and best in class position within the industry. The VSL will drive improvement across our Supply Chain network to meet a standard of operational excellence.

    This improvement will include the application of proven tools for continuous improvement, establishing standard operating procedures, a Lean Six Sigma (LSS) playbook with standard practices and the attainment of the annual productivity goals. Additionally, this role will coach the plant and logistics Lean Six Sigma (LSS) Leads to much greater levels of capability, sophistication, and performance. Key focus areas for improvement will be cost savings identification through Value Stream Mapping (VSM), pipeline build, productivity delivery, waste identification, cost reduction, loss/downtime reduction and OEE attainment.


    Responsibilities include:

    • As a member of the Operational Excellence team, work with peers and field leaders to ensure attainment of operations, logistics, and procurement annual and long-term productivity objectives across the Dean supply chain network. Ensure compliance and collaboration on quality, safety, cost, people, and customer service objectives.
    • Lead the overall development and execution of cost savings plans for approximately 8 to 10 plants with production volume of approximately 0.4 billion gallons and a labor cost totaling approximately $76M.
    • Work with the Dir. VSL – Logistics to deliver the overall productivity improvement of the Dean Supply Chain network.
    • Provide overall Lean Six Sigma and productivity playbook deployment strategy to deliver efficiency, waste, and cost objectives.
    • Ensure the achievement of all supply chain KPIs including those related to throughput, cost savings, labor (Operations & Logistics) efficiency, utilization, Frequency and OEE.
    • Drive the execution of the OpEx2020 playbook in the supply chain by developing the master plan for the LSS deliverables.
    • Support recommendations for the creation, justification, and implementation of all capital projects
    • Integrate the Lean Six Sigma methodology into our supply chain optimization efforts across the Dean network
    • Build standard operating procedures and processes to ensure standards are met at all levels. Support root cause analysis and best practice reapplication across the network.
    • Involvement in value stream analysis and Zero-Based Budgeting (ZBB) for all segments of the Dean supply chain network.
    • Directly responsible for the performance management, engagement, and career development of direct staff.
    • Develop long term (OpEx2020) productivity improvement and cost savings strategy for Dean Foods
    • Develop and deploy standard tool kit for Productivity Optimization and Cost Savings improvement.



    This position is a member of the Operational Excellence team. There are no Direct reports include in this role.


    Products are manufactured and distributed by 68 company owned plants and over 400 warehouses/branches with an average of 5,000 routes per day covering three regions (North, South, West). Dean supply chain has an employee population totaling more than 15,000 associates for all personnel.


    Job Requirements:

    The Manager, Value Stream Leader will have 5 to 7 years of operational/manufacturing experience and at least two years of Manager or Supervisor level experience. Food industry experience is not mandatory but highly desired. A high energy, creative approach to problems will require an individual who is highly intelligent, analytical, financial, a quick study, and a team player with strong leadership skills. Current responsibility for leading a Lean methodologies, continuous improvement and operations excellence supporting a large plant network is not required, but highly desired.

    Proven experience in applying sophisticated continuous improvement (lean six-sigma) is highly desirable but not a mandatory prerequisite for the job. Demonstrated experience in optimizing production efficiency and reducing manufacturing cost viewed as a plus. The individual must have experience in implementing such management practices or raising their level of utilization as opposed to simply operating an existing process. The individual will have had experience in a large company with a reputation for strict cost management.

    Bachelor’s degree in engineering, business administration, operations management, or a related field. A graduate-level degree in manufacturing, operations management, engineering is desirable but not required.
